TESTING LISTENING

A.   Definition
            Listening encompasses the acts of hearing and paying attention. The most common meaning of "listening" is "to give attention with the ear." Listening involves a sender (a person, radio, television), a message, and a receiver (the listener). Listeners often must process messages as they come, even if they are still processing what they have just heard, without backtracking or looking ahead. In addition, listeners must cope with the sender's choice of vocabulary, structure, and rate of delivery.
            Listening is the language modality that is used most frequently. It has become the foundation of a number of theories of second language acquisition that focus on the beginning levels of second language profiency.
Listening comprehension is a complex process, crucial in the development of second language competence. Listeners use both bottom-up processers (linguistic knowledge) and top-down processes (prior knowledge) to comprehend. Knowing the context of a listening text and the purpose for listening greatly reduces the burden of comprehension

B.   The Indicator of Listening
There are three indicators used to indicate the students’ ability in listening comprehension skill. The indicators are: Specific Information, Actors Involved, and Setting of Conversation
The first indicator is specific information. This indicates how the student understand about informations that they have heard. If students understand the conversation well, students can find the answers to questions quickly and easily.
The second indicator is actors involved. This indicates how the students recognize how much people are talking and what their position on the conversation.
And the last indicator of listening comprehension is setting of conversation. This indicate how the student recognize the setting place of the conversation they have heard.
